Like in many developing countries, Sri Lanka too faces numerous challenges and difficulties in urban solid waste management. In order to address this situation more effectively, attention has been directed towards the preparation of a comprehensive Urban Solid Waste Management Master Plan to ensure that municipal waste is collected, segregated, and disposed of in a safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly manner.

Accordingly, taking into consideration the National Waste Management Policy approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on 1st October 2019, a project has been implemented under a Japan International Cooperation Agreement (JICA) to formulate the Western Province Urban Solid Waste Management Master Plan.
